It was big news back in 1941 when the ‘First Lady of Swing’ Ella Fitzgerald was coming to Indiana Avenue’s Sunset Terrace Club. For one night only, with the band under the direction of Babe Wallace, featuring Teddy McRae.
The Indianapolis Recorder spread the word in the May 17, 1941 issue. “Ella is a magnificent dancer and a superb Jive Artist. The boys in the band know her as a good sport and a real gal,” said the Recorder.
Tickets were 85 cents in advance, $1.10 at the door and could be purchased at the Sunset, Walker Theatre, the Recorder, Cotton Club, Winston’s Drug, Maxey’s Drug, Chicken Shack, Leisure Hour, Dick Shaw’s Penish Tavern, and O’Havers Drug Store.
